Note: Amblyomma hirtum is not included as valid in Keirans (1992), probably because he overlooked this species, whose illustrations in Neumann (1906) resemble the figure of Amblyomma macfarlandi published by Keirans et al. (1973). However, J.E. Keirans in Guglielmone et al. (2003) stated, after checking the types of both taxa, that female Amblyomma hirtum possess very large porose areas and long setae on the dorsum, with whitish-ivory ornamentation confined to the scapular region, while the male of Amblyomma hirtum is much smaller than that of Amblyomma macfarlandi , and its dentition is 2/2, whereas that of Amblyomma macfarlandi is 3/3. Therefore, Amblyomma hirtum and Amblyomma macfarlandi are regarded as valid here. Santos Dias (1958c) treats Amblyomma hirtum as a synonym of Amblyomma pilosum , but both species are valid, as discussed in Guglielmone et al. (2003).
