Note: Bedford (1929) described the nymph of Haemaphysalis cooleyi based on two specimens collected from Procavia capensis but also mentioned several alleged nymphs of this tick taken from Pedetes capensis (named as Pedetes caffer). Warburton (1933) received a male and a female tick collected from Pedetes and identified by Bedford as Haemaphysalis cooleyi but classified both specimens as Haemaphysalis numidiana , a synonym of Haemaphysalis erinacei , while expressing doubts that the nymphs from Pedetes classified by Bedford as Haemaphysalis cooleyi actually belong to this species. The adult ticks from Pedetes identified as Haemaphysalis numidiana by Warburton (1933) were later described as Haemaphysalis pedetes by Hoogstraal (1972).
