An Afrotropical and Palearctic species. Adults of Haemaphysalis leachi are usually found on Carnivora (several families). All parasitic stages have been collected from Carnivora (several families), Erinaceomorpha : Erinaceidae , and Rodentia : Muridae ; adults and nymphs have been found on Artiodactyla : Suidae , while adults and larvae have been taken from Lagomorpha : Leporidae .Adults alone have been recovered from Artiodactyla : Bovidae , Carnivora : Hyaenidae and Mustelidae , Primates : Cercopithecidae , Rodentia : Hystricidae , and Passeriformes : Muscicapidae ; while nymphs and larvae have been found on Cuculiformes : Cuculidae (Apanaskevich et al. 2007, Sylla et al. 2018, whose records of immature stages are considered provisionally valid). Haemaphysalis leachi is a very rare parasite of humans.

Note: Nuttall and Warburton (1915) described the nymph and larva of Haemaphysalis leachi , but these descriptions are ignored in Hoogstraal (1958) and Apanaskevich et al. (2007), probably because they consider them incorrect. There are several other redescriptions of alleged Haemaphysalis leachi published prior to the study of Apanaskevich et al. (2007) that are excluded from the lists above due to extensive misidentification of this species. See Haemaphysalis asiatica , Haemaphysalis canestrinii , Haemaphysalis colesbergensis , Haemaphysalis elliptica and Haemaphysalis spinulosa for their confusion with Haemaphysalis leachi .
