46. Rhipicephalus maculatus Neumann, 1901 .

An Afrotropical species, all of whose parasitic stages are usually found on Artiodactyla : Bovidae , but all parasitic stages have also been collected from Artiodactyla : Suidae . Adults and nymphs have been recovered from Perissodactyla : Rhinocerotidae ; adults and unknown immature stages have been taken from Carnivora : Felidae ; adult ticks alone have been found on Carnivora : Hyaenidae , Perissodactyla : Equidae , and Proboscidea : Elephantidae , with an odd record from Squamata : Varanidae . Larvae and nymphs have been collected from Macroscelididea: Macroscelidae, and unknown immature stages from Carnivora : Viverridae , and Hyracoidea : Procaviidae . Rhipicephalus maculatus is a sporadic parasite of humans.

Note: Santos Dias (1948c) allegedly described the larva and redescribed the nymph of Rhipicephalus maculatus , but his descriptions differ from those in Walker et al. (2000), which were based on laboratory-reared material, and his study is therefore not included in the above lists. Walker et al. (2000) also state that Gertrud Theiler personally communicated to Jane B. Walker that the description of the nymph of Rhipicephalus masseyi in Theiler (1947) corresponds to Rhipicephalus maculatus .
