An Afrotropical and Palearctic species whose adults are usually found on Artiodactyla : Bovidae , but they have also been recovered from Mammalia (several orders), and rarely from Galliformes : Phasianidae . Nymphs and larvae have been collected from Rodentia : Hystricidae and Muridae . Rhipicephalus praetextatus is a rare parasite of humans.

Note: according to Pegram et al. (1987a), who reinstated Rhipicephalus praetextatus , this species had previously been extensively confused with Rhipicephalus simus .
