It is argued above that the name of this variety is to be changed to S. inconstans var. inconstans Dendy, 1887 as this is indicated as the nominotypical variety which must bear the name of the species (ICZN art. 46-47). The present nominotypical variety and the next one below are proposed to be merged into a single taxon, as the differences between the two are negligible, and the locality of the two is the same (Rameswaram Island, Gulf of Mannar, approximate coordinates 13.08°N 80.3°E, lectotype BMNH 1887.8.4.2, one paralectotype in the Madras Museum, now Government Museum, Chennai, cf. Vosmaer 1911: 18). The species is to be named Spheciospongia inconstans ( Dendy, 1887) .
