Heterostachys Ung.-Stemb., Atti Congr. Bot. Firenze 1874: 267 268, 33] (1876).
Succulent shrubs with cylindrical leaves. Flowers solitary, free, in the axil of opposite caducuous bracts; perianth compressed, 4-lobed at the apex, lobes unequal; stamens 2; stigmas 2. Fruit sprongy; seeds vertical; embryo semi-annular; radicle ascendent or descendent; perisperm abundant. Two spp., S and C America.
