The

genus name Centruroides was first introduced by George Marx (in Howard, 1889: 211) for two species of scorpions in the family Buthidae : C. exilicauda (Wood, 1863) and C. luctifer n. sp. The latter species, coming from Indefatigable Is. (Galapagos), lacks a description and has been considered as a nomen nudum and synonym of Centruroides exsul (Meise, 1934) ( Lambertz, 2013) . Nonetheless, exilicauda Wood (Buthus) is an available and valid species name; thus, Centruroides is available according to the ICZN, 1999, Art. 12.2.5. (“the specific name or names can be unambiguously assigned to a nominal species-group taxon or taxa”).

Presently , the genus Centruroides Marx comprises 73 valid species (Zicha, 2018). Breuning (1940: 411) established the homonymous genus name Centruroides when he described the cerambycid species C. bulbifera from Myanmar and placed it in the lamiine tribe Morimopsini . Subsequently, this genus has been mentioned in the revision of worldwide Morimopsini ( Breuning, 1950) and in the catalogue of the types of the Smithsonian Institution ( Lingafelter et al., 2014), without anyone noticing the homonymy. It is a very peculiar taxon, whose relationship to other genera of the tribe Morimopsini is unresolved, even if Bi (2016) suggested that it could be closely related to, or perhaps even synonymous, with Echthistatodes Gressitt, 1938 .

The genus name is, nonetheless, a junior primary homonym of Centruroides Marx and a substitute name must be introduced according to the ICZN, Articles 56 and 60. There are no junior synonyms; therefore, Art. 60.3 applies. Hence, the new name Bulbotrachystola is proposed as follows:

Bulbotrachystola nomen novum for Centruroides Breuning, 1940 nec Marx, 1889; type species Centruroides bulbifera Breuning, 1940 (by monotypy).
