Presence of 25–37 teeth in premaxillary; 23–36 teeth in dentary; orbit diameter 17–24% of head length; lack keels on body; most specimens with abdomen completely naked; pterotic-supracleitrum and supraocciptal without keels. Hypostomus sp. 1 has an uncommon pattern of pigmentation, distinguishing it from all other congeners. It can be differentiated from all congeners by its reddish brown body without spots on the dorsal and caudal fins.
