Therefore, it can be stated that currently on the territory of Latvia 298 species of syrphid flies have been registered. These species belong to 67 genera and are divided into 4 subfamilies and 11 tribes ( Tab. 1).

Eleven species included in the catalog ( Karpa, 2008) as independent species are considered in this work as synonyms for the following species: Cheilosia rotundicornis Hellén, 1914 (= Cheilosia vernalis (Fallén, 1817) , Chrysotoxum festivum (Linnaeus, 1758) (= Phihelius festivus (Linnaeus, 1758) , Dasysyrphus hilaris (Zetterstedt, 1843) (= Dasysyrphus venustus (Meigen, 1822) , Dasysyrphus pinastri (De Geer, 1776) (= Dasysyrphus venustus (Meigen, 1822) , Dasysyrphus postclaviger (Stys & Moucha, 1962) (= Dasysyrphus intrudens (Osten Sacken, 1877) , Epistrophe flava Doczkal & Schmid, 1994 (= Epistrophe melanostoma (Zetterstedt, 1843) , Eristalis interrupta Poda, 1761 (= Eoseristalis arbustorum (Linnaeus, 1758) , Eristalis picea (Fallén, 1817) (= Eoseristalis rupium Fabricius, 1805 ), Microdon latifrons Loew, 1856 (= Microdon analis (Macquart, 1842) , Pipiza austriaca Meigen, 1822 (= Pipiza festiva Meigen, 1822 ), Sphaerophoria sarmatica Bankowska, 1964 (= Sphaerophoria philanthus (Meigen, 1822) , Xylotacurvipes Loew,1854(= Chalcosyrphus femoratus (Linnaeus, 1758) . At the same time, Cheilosia rotundiventris Becker, 1894 , C. vernalis (Fallén, 1817) , C. nasutula (Becker, 1894) , C. vicina (Zetterstedt, 1849) and Eoseristalis vitripennis Strobl, 1893 are considered as valid species.

The analysis of distribution across the territory of Latvia has showed that syrphids are registered in 32 out of 36 municipalities (there are still no registrations from the Balvu, Gulbenes, L Ó v ‚ nu and Smiltenes novads (municipality)). However, the degree of knowledge of particular regions is very variable ( Tab. 1).

The most studied in terms of species appeared to be the regions of Western Latvia – J˚rmala (186 species), R Ó ga (177), Limba˛u (127), ¬da˛u (121), Ventspils (76) and Tukuma (68) novads (municipality) .

The same pattern is reflected in the degree of knowledge of the territories located within the Historical Latvian Lands. The largest number of species was registered in the western regions of Vidzeme (261 species), 139 species were registered in Kurzeme, 83 species – in Zemgale, and 79 species in the most southeastern region – Latgale.

For comparison, 284 species are now known in Lithuania (Pakalni ś kis et al. 2006, Lutovinovas 2007, Lutovinovas 2012, Lutovinovas & Kinduris 2013, Lutovinovas & Kinduris 2015, Lutovinovas & Venckus 2015, Lutovinovas & P˚tys 2022), Estonia – 214 species ( Haarto & Kerppola 2007), Belarus – 257 ( Borodin & Borodina 2014, Borodin & Makoveckaja 2016, 2017, Volosach 2017), European part of Russia – 407 ( Barkalov & Mutin 2018), Poland – 372 (› óralski et al. 2022), Finland – 362 ( Haarto & Kerppola 2014), Sweden – 400 ( van Steenis 2011).

The Syrphidae fauna of Latvia is one of the most taxonomically well studied in this part of Europe, however, as shown by our gap analysis, additional research is required in certain regions of the country, which will provide more complete data on the distribution of individual species and on the local biological diversity of Syrphidae .
