scientific name

Cynara cardunculus L.
status

Cynara cardunculus Linnaeus  , Species Plantarum 2: 827. 1753.

"Habitat in Creta." RCN: 5989.

Lectotype (Wiklund in Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 109: 113. 1992): [icon] "Scolymus aculeatus" in Tabernaemontanus, New Vollk. Kräuterb.: 1075. 1664.

Generitype of Cynara Linnaeus  (vide Green, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 179. 1929).

Current name: Cynara cardunculus L.  ( Asteraceae  ).

Note: Although Wiklund cited an earlier (1590) Tabernaemontanus work as the place of publication of the lectotype figure, the pagination given by Linnaeus makes it clear that he had used a later (1664) work. Wiklund’s intention was, however, entirely clear and this is treated as a minor, correctable error.
