Hydronema Martynov, 1914: 126 View in CoL . Type species: Hydronema persica View in CoL , by monotypy.

Type locality. Uzbekistan .

Species in this genus are large, with glabrous wings. The species are easy to separate from species in other genera by the presence of a character combination of 2 subfamilies. Hydronema and Macronematinae have a short discoidal cell, reduction of forewing setae, and size reduction of the palps. With the Hydropsychinae they share modified male pretarsal claws, and shorter antennae. The unmodified generic primary characters are: (1) the proepisternal setal wart are present; (3) each forewing crossvein m-cu is located distally of crossvein cu; (4) each hind wing median cell is closed; and (5) the hind wing crossvein m-cu is present. Derived primary characters are: (2) preanal appendages reduced to setal warts or surfaces; and (6) spur formula 024 in male and female. The proepisternal setal warts are present in both the males and the females, although they are small and difficult to discern. They were overlooked in the analysis of Schefter (2005). The spurs are small and there is significant variations in their number, also in the hind tibiae with 2 to 4 spurs, sometimes the number differs between the left and right legs of the same animal. Among secondary generic characters the sexually dimorphic pretarsal claws are asymmetrical, with setal bundle on all legs in the males, and symmetrical in the females.
