Distribution. Palaearctic species, widespread in Europe (except for the British Isles and the Mediterranean Region) and ranging eastwards as far as Japan.

Status in CZ. Thus far known only from historical Bohemian records: Aš ( Kowarz 1877, 1884) and Františkovy Lázně ( Vimmer 1913), and there is a single male specimen from Františkovy Lázně (F. Kowarz lgt. et det.) in the historical collection of NMPC (examined). Its presence is here confirmed after more than 100 years.

Ecology. Mainly found on tree trunks in forests, and, as a member of the M. signaticornis –pinicola species group, with a preference for coniferous trees; see also Pollet et al. (2011).
