Thrypticus smaragdinus Gerstäcker, 1864 View in CoL
Material examined. Moravia: Opava (6073), Palhanec GoogleMaps , 49°58′06″N 17°52′07″E, 258 m, sweeping Bolboschoenus on sugar beet field, 17.vi.2015, J. Roháček lgt., 1 ♂ ( SMOC). Valtice, ca 2 km NW (7266), margin of Nesyt pond, 3.vi.1973, 1 ♀, J. Olejníček lgt. et det. ( NMPC); same data, Slanisko u Nesytu NNR, 3.vi.1973, 1 ♂, J. Olejníček lgt. et det. ( NMPC).
Distribution. Widespread in Europe and known also from Ukraine, Russia (European part) and Israel.
Status in CZ. Based on Olejníček (1974) and all subsequent checklists, T. smaragdinus should be known from CZ (Moravia), however, we were not able to find any published specimen records. It is likely that such records have never been published and the source of this information is the above listed specimens from Valtice, as they bear an identification label “ Thrypticus smaragdinus Gerst. ” by Olejníček and corresponding date (before 1974). On the other hand, it is not clear why Olejníček (1998) did not include T. smaragdinus in the list of species of the Pálava Biosphere Reserve, although both the Valtice and Nesyt ponds are located within this area and frequently quoted in this paper (see also remarks under T. atomus ). In any case, the occurrence in CZ is confirmed by the records presented herein.
Ecology. Collected in common reed stands ( Parent 1924; Frey 1956; Grootaert et al. 1988; Meyer & Heydemann 1990; Dyte 1992, 1993; Laurence 1995; Pollet 2000; Drake et al. 2023) and also reared from Phragmites australis ( Lübben 1908; Waitzbauer et al. 1973). No other Thrypticus specimens have been found by sweeping Bolboschoenus stands (Dobroměřice, Kateřina, Plzeň-Bolevec ), and thus the above mentioned finding of a single specimen might only represent a random occurrence.
