Type Locality: "Isthmus of Panama ", restricted to Panama, Canal Zone by Hershkovitz (1954).
Vernacular Names: Baird's Tapir.
Synonyms: Tapirus bairdi (Gray 1868) ; Tapirus dowi Alston 1880 ; Tapirus dowii Gill 1870 .
Distribution: East from Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Mexico, through all other Central American states to Colombia west of the Rio Cauca and Ecuador west of the Andes to the Gulf of Guayaquil.
Conservation: CITES – Appendix I; U.S. ESA and IUCN – Endangered.
