Annual or biennial herbs, dioecious with few bisexual flowers. Flowers in clusters, the staminate ones axillary; perianth 4-5-lobed; stamens 4-5, filaments fused at base; pistillate flowers dispersed in a spiciform inflorescence, 2-bracteolate; bracteoles 2-4-toothed, connate almost up tothe top, encircling and covering the fruit as indurated envelope; stigmas 4-5. Seeds vertical; embryo annular; radicle pointing downward. Three spp., N Africa, W Asia.
