Diagnosis. Tomarus maternus is characterized by the antennal club subequal in length to antennomeres 2–7; clypeus narrowed towards apex (base 2.5 times wider than apex); frontoclypeal tubercles transverse; pronotum nearly smooth, with minute, sparse punctation; pronotal tubercle small, as a transverse tumescence; pronotal fovea shallow and narrow; scutellum with 2 lines of punctures parallel to the lateral borders; protibial tridentate, without an additional basal denticle; apex of metatibia with 14–17 spinules; parameres with an acute tooth each side, apical third nearly straight and with 2 small, lobed projections on each apex ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 16–18 ).

Locality records ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 16–18 ). 12 males and 14 females from CEUC, MNHUB, MZUSP, MEKRB, and USNM . 1 specimen from CMNC. Ayacucho (2): La Mar, Santa Rosa. Cuzco (6): Pilcopata. Huánuco (13): Tingo María. Madre de Dios (4): Shintuya. San Martín (1): Huallaga. Imprecise data (1): Peru .

Temporal distribution. February (1), March (3), April (1), June (1), August (2), September (2), October (2), November (4), December (5). No data (6).

Distribution. Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia (Endr̂di 1969), Costa Rica ( Ratcliffe 2003), Honduras, Nicaragua ( Ratcliffe & Cave 2006), and Venezuela ( Escalona & Joly 2006).

Natural history. The examined specimens were found between 500– 670 m.
