( Fig. 18 View FIGURE 18 A–C)

Larva. Remarks. Life stages associated by Hynes (1982) by noting the male genitalia in a mature larva. Hynes (1982) suggested this was circumstantial evidence but genetic methods in this paper have confirmed this association of life stages.

Material examined: Tasmania: 2 x larvae , 1 x exuvia: small stream 2 miles from Mt Barrow (A505). - 41.37559, 147.42179. Collected: 26-Nov-78, Collector: N Hynes, Accession number: AN08 0 0 0 995 (housed in ANIC). 1 x larva: Wedge River , 30 W Maydena. Collected: 25-Feb-67. Collector: EF Riek, Accession number: AN08 0 0 0 994 (housed in ANIC) . 1 x larva: Collected from soil litter near Anglers Creek (A282). -42.22, 147.83. Collected: 18-Sept-77, Collector: JA Friend, Accession number: AN08 0 0 0 996 (housed in ANIC) . Ben Lomond National Park: 1 x larva: Creek at campground. -41.50244, 147.61481. Collected: 17-Jan-12, Collector: J Mynott & M Shackleton, Accession number: JMH460. Flinders Island: Strezlecki National Park: 1 x adult male: Carena Park Creek at crossing on Mt Strezlecki walking track. -40.20619, 148.05275. Collected: 9-Dec-11, Collectors: J Mynott & M Carey, Accession number: JMH480.

Length: 12 mm (AN08 000996)

Colour: Pale brown with longitudinal stripes along abdomen.

Body: Robust.

Head: Dorsal surface with short robust setae. Antennae long but not longer than body; tapering to elongated segments near tip; without fringe of long fine setae.

Thorax: Bosses not prominent but are raised. Pronotum quadrate (broader in posterior area) and subequal with head, in early instars width greater than length. Pronotal margins with fringe of short robust setae. meso- and metanota with lateral area and margins with short robust setae.

Legs: Tarsal claws small; tarsal segments robust in appearance especially 1st and 2nd but same width as 3rd (possibly just in terrestrial specimens, not in aquatic). Legs narrow, tibia long. Legs with short robust setae present; outer margins without fringe of long fine setae. Broad dark bands in distal area of femora.

Abdomen: Tergites with short robust setae and fringe present on hind margin; tergite X length greater than width; posterior margin evenly convex. Cerci approximately as long as abdomen in early instar specimens and elongate. Paraprocts very long, 1.5 times basal width. Gills light in colour.
