Bodotria (Atlantobodotria) andamanensis sp. nov.

Material examined. Holotype immature female ( MGAB CUM 1688). Type locality: Wandoor (11°40.55’N, 92°45.12’E), Andaman Islands, intertidal sediments among macroalgae ( Halimeda opuntia ), December 2005; coll. T. Chatterjee.
Diagnosis. Small cumacean, with two large visual elements, first segment of pereon hardly visible, maxilliped 3 with large articles, short uropod, rami with 2 articles.
Description. Female. Body, relatively short, 1.4 mm in length.
Carapace ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 A). 0.34 of entire body length, 1.5 longer than high, short pseudorostral lobes, 0.17 times as long as frontal lobe, ocular lobe with two lateral lenses partially pigmented, distinct antennal notch, dorsal median serrate carina.
Pereon. 0.24 of entire body length, first segment hardly visible, second more elevated than others, mid-dorsal serrations on 2nd segment, 2nd to 5th segment with lateral carina.
Pleon. 0.41 of entire body length, segments robust, 1st to 4th with lateral carina, 5th segment the longest.
Antenna 1 ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 B). Short, basal article of peduncle as long as apical article, 1.5 times as long as second article, main flagellum with 3 articles, with simple setae, accessory with one article, with sensory setae.
Maxilliped 3 ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 C). Basis 1.9 times as long as remaining articles combined, very small outer process with two plumose long setae and one much smaller one, carpus as long as ischium and merus together, with a short anterior feathered seta, 1.12 times as long as carpus, two short pappose setae on medial margin, twice as long as dactylus. Exopod with three-articled flagellum.
Pereopod 1 ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 D). Basis 1.2 times as long as rest of articles together, carpus little longer than ischium and merus combined, with one simple seta on its medial margin, 1.8 times as long as propodus, propodus 1.4 times as long as dactylus. Exopod with three-articled flagellum, longer than that of 3rd maxilliped.
Pereopod 2 ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 E). Basis 1.16 times as long as rest of articles together, carpus 1.2 times as long as ischium and merus together, with one simple outer distal seta, dactylus 2.4 times as long as propodus. Without exopod.
Pereopod 3 ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 F). Basis 0.47 times as long as entire pereopod length, four simple long setae on outer margin, merus 1.7 times as long as ischium, carpus 1.36 times as long as merus, propodus 1.8 times as long as dactylus.
Pereopod 4 ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 G). Basis 0.36 times as long as entire length of pereopod, carpus 1.3 times as long as merus, propodus 1.8 times as long as dactylus.
Pereopod 5 ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 H). Basis 0.3 times as long as entire pereopod length, basis 3 times longer than dactylus, terminal seta much longer than dactylus.
Pereopods 1 to 5 armed with simple setae.
Uropod ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 I). Peduncle 1.3 times as long as 6th segment of pleon, with serrate margins, 1.25 times as long as rami, exopod with two articles, two short subterminal and terminal setae, endopod as long as exopod, with two articles, proximal article twice as long as distal one, one short subterminal seta and one terminal seta.
Male. Unknown.
Etymology. Named after the type locality, the Andaman Islands.
Remarks. The first segment of the pereon of the new species is visible dorsally, as in B. (A.) choprai Kurian (1951) from Kerala, India (Arabian Sea); B. (A.) andamanensis n. sp. has maxilliped 3 without an outer process on the basis, while the outer process on the basis of maxilliped 3 is present in B. (A.) choprai . More evident visual elements are present in the new species than in the other species of the subgenus Atlantobodotria. Maxilliped 3 has comparatively large articles, a basis with a very short outer process, reaching the distal extremity of the ischium, shorter than in other species with a small process, B. australis Stebbing (1912) , B. clara Day (1978) , B. elevata Jones (1960) and B. nitida Day (1978) all from the Eastern Indian Ocean ( South Africa, Tanzania) where the process reaches the distal extremity of the merus. Bodotria andamanensis sp. nov. has a short uropod, as in B. quseirensis Mühlenhardt-Siegel (2000) from the Red Sea (ratio of the peduncle: 6th article of pleon, 1.3 versus 1.4), and in two species from the subgenus Bodotria Goodsir, 1843 , B. pulex Zimmer (1903) from Japan and Tanzania ( Petrescu, 1998) and B. rugosa Gamô (1963) from Japan (ratio of the peduncle: 6th article of pleon less than 1.2).
