Subfamily Laphriinae Macquart, 1838

Laphriinae Macquart, 1838: 14, 56. Type genus: Laphria Meigen, 1803: 270 .

The subfamily Laphriinae is the second largest in South Korea with 3 genera and 13 species. The subfamily is characterized by mostly heavily setose flies resembling bees ( Laphria ). The males all share rotated genitalia. The South Korean Laphria show broad external differences (body size, hair color), the male genitalia are indistinct between closely related species. The division between some genera is tenuous ( Oldroyd, 1972) and the separating, diagnostic features presented in this study may not extend to other areas. Lehr’s use (1989) of the “metanotal calli” to distinguish between the Choerades and Laphria is questionable, perhaps due to terminology translation.
