Type information: Syntypes (2M, 2F), “Gallia meridionalis, in agro Tergestino” ( Charpentier 1825); all in ZMB (“ Mus Berolin” Charpentier 1825).

Remarks on type specimens and type locality: Until 1927 E. chabrieri was thought to be a clearly defined species with its terra typica in southern Europe (southern France and/or northern Italy). In this year, however, Ramme discovered that the types did not belong to the similar looking species found in these areas. In a very careful study he examined all syntypes and decided - correctly at that time – that the majority of the types (for details see Ramme 1927) represented an east Mediterranean species, E. smyrnensis ( Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1882) , and synonymized the latter with the much earlier described E. chabrieri . This opinion was accepted and the name E. chabrieri was applied in this sense. In a second paper on this topic, Ramme (1951) surprisingly got the impression that the types were lost, although in his paper from 1927 he had traced meticulously the history of the type series. Ramme came to his new conclusion mainly because he received a recently collected specimen from the town Chabrieres (southern France). He assumed that Charpentier when describing E. chabrieri had specimens from this place and named his new species after this locality. Firstly, however, there is no doubt that the types in Berlin are the animals Charpentier based his description on, and secondly, Charpentier would certainly not have latinised Chabrieres into ‘chabrieri’. The word ‘chabrieri’ indicates clearly a male person with the name Chabrier, not uncommon in French. Unfortunately the opinion of Ramme was again accepted. Since that time (1951) E. chabrieri is thought to be a species with the type locality in southern France, although the types still exist documenting that it is not the species occurring there. In the interest of nomenclatural stability and following article 75.6 of the Zoological Code ( ICZN 1999), we maintain the prevailing usage sensu Ramme (1951). We will make a request to the Commission to set aside the existing name-bearing type and to designate a neotype.
