Polyprion americanus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) —Wreckfish

12 specimens were caught at depths between 645 and 740 m. Length data were available for 2 specimens of 119 and 120 cm TL. Length data during the exploratory surveys carried out on the 1980s was to 132 cm for males and to 142 cm for females, but the total number of individuals caught was not reported. The presence of this species associated with floating objects has also been reported. At least one specimen of 51 cm TL was caught in the surface of the Galicia Bank during the 1980s surveys. Habitat and Distribution: pelagic (juveniles) to demersal (adults), above rocky and muddy/sandy bottoms in continental, oceanic island slopes and seamounts, from 40 to 1,000 m, usually from 100 to 200 m. Circumglobal, including the Mediterranean Sea, mostly in temperate and subtropical latitudes. In the eastern Atlantic, from Norway to South Africa. Vulnerability: DD (IUCN), VHV (FishBase).
