Diagnosis. Centrodorsal discoidal; cirri IX–XXXVI, 8–22, opposing spine mostly absent; aboral processes in distal cirrals generally absent though a weak spine sometimes develops on one or two cirrals; ten arms only; IBr series and (br1/2) joined by synarthry; first syzygy at br3+4; oral pinnules P 2, P 3, Pb and Pc present or absent; middle pinnulars of oral pinnules constricted in the middle, proximal and distal edges slightly flared, pinnular comb teeth up to P 6; confluent with exterior edge of the arm or nonconfluent; mouth excentric in adults.
Remarks. The present diagnosis is largely based on Messing (1978) and is amended to include the morphological variation present within Comactinia .
Type species. Comactinia echinoptera ( Müller, 1840) View in CoL , by original designation. ( type locality unknown).
