Diagnosis. The female is similar to that of P. minima in having a reticulate scutum and broad, translucent margins of metasomal terga T1–T4. They can be distinguish by the supraclypeal area and paraocular area, which is extensively reticulate in P. minima and at only partly reticulate in P. terminalis . The male is unknown.

Description

Female. Bl = 5,3–5,7mm. General habitus ( Fig. 126e View FIGURE 126 ). Head. L = 1,5–1,6mm; W = 1,7–1,8mm. Head wider than long ( Fig. 126a View FIGURE 126 ). Integument black except mandibles and malar area usually partly reddish-brown. Face shiny and with loose, greyish, erect hairs. Mandibles bidentate. Clypeus and supraclypeal area convex in profile. Clypeus, supraclypeal area and paraocular area sparsely punctate; surface polished; surface of supraclypeal area finely reticulate; surface of paraocular area finely sculptured. Clypeoantennal distance 0,3mm. Antennae reddish-brown. Mesosoma. L = 1,1–1,2mm; W (ITS) = 1,3–1,4mm. Integument black. Scutum shiny; surface extensively and finely reticulate; disc moderately densely punctate (i = 1,5d) ( Fig. 126b View FIGURE 126 ). Scutellum as illustrated in Fig. 126c View FIGURE 126 . Scutum, scutellum, metanotum, mesepisternum and propodeum with greyish to pallid brownish, erect hairs. Basal area of propodeum as illustrated in Fig. 126c View FIGURE 126 ; propodeum slightly dull; completely reticulate and sparsely punctate. Marginal region of posterior truncation slightly dull; extensively reticulate. Wings. Hyaline. Legs. Integument brownish. Vestiture greyish. Ts finely serrate; with about 8–10 short, oblique projections ( Fig. 126f View FIGURE 126 ). Bp as illustrated ( Fig. 126g View FIGURE 126 ). Metasoma. L = 2,8–3,3mm; W = 1,9–2,0mm. Integument brownish to blackish-brown; margins of T pallid brown to pale and broadly translucent. No apical hair bands. Prepygidial fimbria pallid brownish. Male. Unknown.

Type material ( 1 specimen). Holotype, female, B.M. Type HYM Halictus terminalis, Smith 1853 (handwritten white label), Type H. T. (red-white label), terminalis (Type) Sm. (handwritten white label), 48 10 S. Africa (handwritten white label), B.M. TYPE HYM. 17a.892 (white label), BMNH.

Additional material (2 specimens). 2♀. South Africa, Eastern Cape : 1♀, Hilton, Grahamstown, 18.x.1977, leg. F.W. and S.K. Gess, AMGS; Northern Cape : 1♀, Sors Sors, 9 km NE of Kamieskroon , 12.ix.1992, leg. F.W. and S.K. Gess, AMGS .

Distribution ( Fig. 127 View FIGURE 127 ). Few records exist from the winter rainfal area (Northern Cape) and the summer rainfall area (Eastern Cape).

Floral visitation. Lasiospermum bipinnatum (Asteraceae) , Polycarena cf. collina (Scrophulariaceae) .
