Conservation: U.S. ESA – Proposed Endangered as U. littoralis catalinae , U. l. littoralis , U. l. santacruzae, and U. l. santarosae; IUCN – Lower Risk (cd).
Discussion: Reviewed by Moore and Collins, (1995). Placed in Canis (Vulpes) by Van Gelder (1978). Gilbert et al. (1990), George and Wayne (1991), Wayne et al. (1991 a, b), and Collins (1993) supported full species status. Synonyms allocated according to Moore and Collins (1995).
