Phloeocharis subtilissima var. hummleri BERNHAUER, 1915: 69 View in CoL ; syn. nov.

Phloeocharis hummleri View in CoL was originally described as a variety of P. subtilissima View in CoL , based on an unspecified number of syntypes from “Kreta” ( BERNHAUER 1915). According to the original description, it is distinguished from P. subtilissima View in CoL only by longer elytra and the presence of a palisade fringe at the posterior margin of the abdominal tergite VII. SCHEERPELTZ (1931) regarded the taxon as a distinct species. An examination of recently collected material (including a male) from Crete, which is in perfect agreement with the original description of P. hummleri View in CoL , revealed that it is conspecific with P. longipennis FAUVEL, 1875 View in CoL . Since there is little doubt that the same is true of the type material of P. hummleri View in CoL , this name is placed in synonymy with P. longipennis View in CoL . The previously known distribution of P. longipennis View in CoL ranged from the Greek Aegean islands Lesbos and Samos across Turkey to the Middle East ( Lebanon, Syria, Israel) ( ASSING 2004c, 2005c, SCHÜLKE & SMETANA 2015). The record of P. hummleri View in CoL from Hungary by TÓTH (1982) most likely refers to P. subtilissima MANNERHEIM, 1830 View in CoL .
