Tetraodontidae View in CoL View at ENA

(toadfishes)

Contusus richei (Fréminville, 1813)

Barred Toadfish

Tetrodon richei Fréminville, 1813: 250 View in CoL (Port Recherche, Terre de Nyts, Great Australian Bight).— Klunzinger 1880: 100 (Port Darwin).

Sphoeroides richei — Taylor 1964: 298 (Port Darwin).

Taylor (1964) cites Klunzinger, who reported on specimens from “Port Philip, Port Darwin, King George Sound, Neu-Seeland”. We suggest that “Port Darwin” is a error. Alternatively, Klunzinger may have had a specimen of Chelonodon patoca View in CoL from Darwin, which somewhat resembles Contusus richei View in CoL .

DISCUSSION

One thousand, four hundred and seventy-four fish species are reported here from the NT, with 120 of these being new records for the region and three new records for Australia. One hundred and seventy-one species have so far been described with an NT type locality. As of September 2012, the NTM holds 86 holotypes, 48 of which are from the NT. It also holds 348 lots of paratypes, with 238 of these from the NT (comprising 48 species) .

It is difficult to say how many NT species are genuinely rare, due to the lack of knowledge of so much of the fauna. A number of offshore species are known from only one record, but this is due to lack of sampling in appropriate habitats (especially deepwater species such as gonorhynchids or pelagic species such as Prionace and Rhincodon ). Freshwater fishes have been better documented and are easier to observe and collect. Several species are “rare” because they have small distributions, being restricted to particular habitats, such as Craterocephalus centralis and Chlamydogobius japalpa , each restricted to suitable habitats in the Finke River of central Australia and found nowhere else.

Forty-four species are noted as being dubious records for the NT. Further sampling effort may confirm these as additional records to the region’s fish fauna, as would targetted sampling in less accessible regions and poorly known habitats. Ongoing taxonomic review of existing collections will also continue to add to the overall number of species known from the NT.

Larson (2005) stated that “Fifty species of Northern Territory fishes have threatened species status according to several Acts and organisations. Almost half of these species (26) are elasmobranchs, of which 11 are whaler sharks (family Carcharhinidae ). Nine other listed species are syngnathids (seahorses and pipefishes), which are speciose in the Northern Territory. Most of the different threatened species listings assign different levels of threat, although the two speartooth sharks, the Finke desert-goby, the four sawfish and the Angalarri grunter all share quite similar listings between the ASFB, EPBC and PWCNT. The poor state of knowledge of the NT’s fish populations and their true distributions is hindering assessment. Many sampling gaps remain and the basic biology of most species is unknown. Ten NT fish species are presently listed as Threatened by Woinarski et al. (2007), seven of which are elasmobranchs.

There are a few feral populations of non-native species (chiefly Betta splendens , Gambusia holbrooki , Poecilia reticulata , Xiphophorus helleri , Xiphophorus maculatus , Hemichromis bimaculatus ), mostly around the urban centres of Darwin and Alice Springs. More non-native species will undoubtedly be detected in the future. The Gambusia have had the most attention directed toward them (around Alice Springs). Various cichlids are known to be kept in backyard ponds.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

A great many people over many years have contributed towards this checklist and it is not possible to list them all here. However, we particularly would like to acknowledge and heartily thank particular staff members of Northern Territory Fisheries, without whose help this work would have been impossible: Rik Buckworth, Charles Bryce, Darryl Grey, Roland Griffin, Julie Martin and Graham White.

Many fishers and fish collectors, recreational and commercial, have assisted us greatly in bringing forward unusual or rare fishes. In particular, Steven Brown, Chris Jones, Keith Martin, Hamar Midgley and Dave Wilson, have made significant contributions. Garry Lindner, of Kakadu National Park, deserves special thanks for his collaboration in the Alligator Rivers work.

Our thanks go to Tom Fraser, for sorting out the apogonid genera for us.

Thanks to Martin Gomon, a nearly anonymous referee and Tony Gill, for their careful review work and additional information.

And our many thanks to Gavin Dally and Suzanne Horner of MAGNT who kept the records straight and helped ensure HKL eventually got the job done.
