Atrichopogon (A.) insularis Kieffer, 1921 View in CoL

( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 D, 1J, 1R, 1V, 2D, 2E)

Atrichopogon insularis Kieffer, 1921: 561 View in CoL (description of male and female - syntypes from Daitotei, Taihoku, Hokuto). Blech & Rohlfien 1987: 220 (holotype and one paratype from Taihoku 1912, 4 paratypes from Hokuto, 1912).

Atrichopogon citrinipes Kieffer, 1922: 154 View in CoL (description of female - Daitotei, Taihoku, Maruyama, and male - Daitotei). Blech & Rohlfien 1987: 218 (in SDEI, holotype from Daitotei, 1914, 2 paratypes from Taihoku, 1912). Syn. nov.

Diagnosis. Eyes bare. Proximal flagellomeres spherical. Paratergite with 3–4 setae. Dark dots at bases of setae on scutum. Scutellum with 4 bristles. Male wing membrane bearing macrotrichia; paratergite with 2 setae.

Description. Female. Body dark brown, legs pale yellow. Eyes bare, broadly fused for distance of 6 facets. Proximal flagellomeres spherical, AR 2.04–2.29 ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 J). Palpus 5–segmented, third palpal segment with small sensory pit at midlength, PR 2.0–2.5 ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 D). Mandible with small 25–30 teeth. Wing length 0.93–1.12 mm, CR 0.74–0.75. Macrotrichia numerous in all marginal cells; second radial cell 3.2–3.8 times longer than first ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 D). Paratergite with 3–4 setae. Setae of scutum with dark dots at bases. Scutellum with 4 bristles and a few short setae. TR (I) 2.7–2.9, TR (II) 2.7–3.2, TR (III) 2.4–2.7. Seminal capsule single, ovoid, with short neck ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 R), 0.085–0.109 mm long.

Male. Similar to female with usual sexual differences. Eyes bare. AR 1.25. PR 3.0. Wing membrane bearing some macrotrichia at wing apex ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 E), length 1.15 mm, CR 0.68. Paratergite bearing 2 setae. Scutellum with 4 bristles. TR (I) 2.9, TR (II) 3.7, TR (III) 2.4. Genitalia yellow ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 V).

Material examined. Atrichopogon insularis : Lectotype female, present designation, Taiwan: Formosa, Taihoku, H. Sauter, 1912, 7.XI, Holotypus, Atrichopogon insularis K., Kieffer det. (incomplete, without antennae). Paralectotype female: Hokuto (Form.), H. Sauter XII. 1912, paratypus, Atrichopogon insularis, Kieffer det.

Atrichopogon citrinipes : Lectotype female, present designation: Daitotei (Form.), H. Sauter, V-VI 1914, Atrichopogon citrinipes K., Holotypus, Paralectotype female, Taihoku, Formosa, H. Sauter, 1912, Paratypus, Atrichopogon citrinipes K. Paralectotype male: Taihoku (Form.), H. Sauter, 1912, Paratypus, Atrichopogon citrinipes K.

Discussion. Atrichopogon (Kempia) insularis sensu Tokunaga (1940b, 1962) and Liu et al. (2001) with hairy eyes is another species of the genus, possibly Atrichopogon crispantis Liu, Yan & Liu, 1996 described from China. We propose here to restore Atrichopogon crispantis Liu, Yan & Liu, 1996 from synonymy with A. insularis Kieffer ( Liu et al. 2001) .

The paralectotype male of Atrichopogon citrinipes in the original description was mentioned as collected from Daitotei, while the specimen in the SDEI collection originates from Taihoku. We suppose that the original locality was stated erroneously in the publication.

Females with bare eyes and bearing 3–4 setae on paratergite, described by Kieffer as A. citrinipes and A. insularis , actually represent one species. We propose here to treat A. citrinipes as a new junior synonym of A. insularis . According to the original description of A. insularis , the male wing membrane is devoid of macrotrichia. Actually, it has macrotichia, which is rare within the subgenus Atrichopogon s. str. Probably Kieffer overlooked that character in his cursory descriptions of small insects.
