Type Locality: No locality cited but reference made to "Hernand. hist. nat. mexic. p. 325". Restricted by Hershkovitz (1951) to Mexico, Veracruz, Mirador.

Vernacular Names: Central American Red Brocket.

Subspecies Mazama temama subsp. reperticia Goldman 1913

Distribution: Belize, W Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico ( SE from S Tamaulipas), Nicaragua, and Panama.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix III ( Guatemala) as M. americana cerasina .

Discussion: Raised to species status by Geist (1998), following suggestions by Groves and Grubb (1987).
