Type Locality: México, Zacatecas State, Zacatecas.
Vernacular Names: Tawny-bellied Cotton Rat.
Synonyms: Sigmodon (Sigmodon) dalquesti Stangl, Jr. 1992 ; Sigmodon (Sigmodon) goldmani Bailey 1913 ; Sigmodon (Sigmodon) melanotis Bailey 1902 ; Sigmodon (Sigmodon) minimus Mearns 1894 ; Sigmodon (Sigmodon) woodi M. C. Gardner 1948 .
Distribution: SE Arizona, WC New Mexico, and SW Texas (see Stangl, 1992), USA, south through interior México to Guanajuato and NW Michoacán.
Conservation: IUCN – Extinct as S. f. goldmani , otherwise Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Subgenus Sigmodon , S. fulviventer species group. Sister species to S. leucotis according to phylogenetic interpretation of cytochrome b data ( Peppers and Bradley, 2000; Peppers et al., 2002). See Baker and Shump (1978, Mammalian Species, 94).
