Type species. Onyctenus sonnerati LePeletier and Audinet-Serville, 1828 , by monotypy. 1 sp.

Geographic distribution. India? (type locality given as ‘Indes Orientales’) .

Notes

The identity of Onyctenus is unknown. As far as we know the type of O. sonnerati has not been examined since the original description and may be lost. A search for the type (in PMNH, NMW) was unsuccessful. Judging from the original description and Beauregard (1890), this genus is somewhat similar to an undescribed Sitaris from S Turkey (perhaps referable to a new subgenus; see below). However, the similarity is only in elytral shape. Onyctenus clearly diVers by the length of the maxillary palpi originally stated to be twice as long as the labial palpi.
