Batillipes gilmartini n. sp. ( McGinty 1969)

Terra typica : Pacific Ocean ( USA, North America)

Black Sea:

• 44°59′N, 35°21′E; 2 m bsl: [FAO37] Ukraine / Russia, SE Crimean Peninsula, Bakhchysarai District, near Ordzhonikidze, Dvuyakornaya Bay, salinity 18–33‰, upper subtidal, medium silty sand with algae. Kharkevych (2013b)

Pacific Ocean:

• 36°38′N, 121°56′W; 0–20 cm / 0–0.2 m bsl: Type Locality: [FAO77] USA, California State, Monterey County, Pacific Grove, SW of Hopkins Marine Station, sandy beach, mid- to high tide, medium grain sand. McGinty (1969)

• 32°50.7′N, 117°16.0′W / 32°51′N, 117°16′W; 0 m bsl: [FAO77] USA, California State, San Diego County, 7.5 km S of Scripps Institution dock, near Point La Jolla, 0–60 cm deep in sand. Pollock (1989)

Remarks: This species was described from the California coast of the Pacific Ocean and later confirmed at a second California locality. A recent report from the Black Sea ( Kharkevych 2013b), in our opinion, requires confirmation as early development stages and adults of Batillipes species are very similar and a large intraspecific variability has also been observed in this genus (e.g. caudal structures ( McKirdy 1975) and caudal structures and body size (Kristensen 1978a)). It has been found in sand (0–60 cm deep) in the intertidal zone.
