Habitus as in Figs. 1–4 View FIGURES 1–6 . Body reddish-brown, usually with slightly paler middle and apical portions of elytra (some specimens sometimes with large yellowish spots ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1–6 ) on each elytron); mouthparts, antennae and legs yellow-brown or slightly darker (maxillary palpomeres or only apical segment of maxillary palpomere and tarsi usually paler). Body glossy; forebody usually without distinct microsculpture, but some specimens with fine indistinct subdiagonal microsculpture on latero-apical portions of head, fine transverse microreticulation between punctures between apical margins of anteocellar foveae and margins of eyes, and fine or coarse transverse microreticulation in mediobasal portion; neck with dense isodiametric microsculpture and scutellum with very fine indistinct transverse meshes in some specimens; pronotum without meshes or with fine transverse microreticulation in mediobasal portion; abdomen with dense transverse microsculpture. Pubescence of forebody yellow, moderately long and dense, semierect, slightly longer on apical portion of head; abdomen with dense and moderately long decumbent pubescence, slightly shorter than that on forebody.

Head 1.2–1.4 times as broad as long, distinctly convex, more elevated between anterior margins of eyes and portions between anteocellar foveae and eyes, clypeus relatively elongate, with strongly convex supra-antennal elevations, with deep and wide subtriangular anterio-median depression (in some specimens this depression markedly deeper near inner margins of supra-antennal elevations), narrowed and extended basad toward interocellar depression and sometimes narrowly and indistinctly connected with it; interocellar depression moderately narrow and deep, subrectangular, separated from infraorbital portions by distinctly convergent latero-anteriad narrow and deep anteocellar foveae, reaching level of apical third or apical margin of eyes; temples convex and moderately long, but distinctly shorter than longitudinal length of eyes. Eyes moderately large, strongly convex. Ocelli small, but distinct, distance between ocelli usually about as long as distance between ocellus and posterior margin of eyes, or significantly longer. Punctation moderately large and sparse, finer in basal portion of clypeus and sparser in middle between anteocellar foveae. Mediobasal portion between ocelli with dense irregular longitudinal elevations or without them. Maxillary palpomere 3 slightly longer than preceding segment, significantly broadened apicad; apical palpomere distinctly shorter than 3, from middle gradually narrowed toward acute apex. Antenna long, reaching middle or apical third of elytra when reclined; basal antennomere robust and long, about three times as long as broad, antennomere 2 distincly narrower and shorter than basal antennomere, 3 distinctly longer than 2, 4 indistinctly broader and shorter than 3, 5–7 indistinctly broader than 4, 8–10 slightly broader and indistinctly shorter than 7, apical antennomere about or slightly less than twice as long as preapical segment, sometimes with distinct constriction in basal portion, from about middle gradually narrowed toward rounded or subacute apex.

Pronotum convex, moderately small, slightly broader than head, 1.1–1.4 times as broad as long, from widest anterior third widely rounded apicad and gradually or sharply narrowed toward obtuse hind angles; laterobasal margins elongate and somewhat subparallel, sometimes indistinctly concave; middle portion without longitudinal depression; mediobasal depression shallow or very deep and transverse in some specimens (some specimens without mediobasal depression); anterior margin straight, rounded or slightly concave, about as long as somewhat straight or sometimes widely concave posterior margin. Punctation regular and dense, slightly larger and denser than that on head, with interspaces between punctures in middle about as long as diameter of one-three nearest punctures, sparser in medioapical (some specimens) and mediobasal portions (some specimens without punctures in front of mediobasal depression).

Scutellum large, without punctures, with fine transverse meshes or without them, with elongate subtriangular apex.

Elytra convex, 1.1–1.3 times as broad as long, slightly or strongly broadened posteriad, 1.6 times as long as pronotum; lateral margins narrowly flattened; hind margins somewhat straight or widely rounded. Punctation variable, about as that on pronotum, usually finer and denser around scutellum, sometimes denser or sparser and finer in middle portion along suture. Hind wings fully developed.

Legs slender; protarsi about twice as long as protibia; meso- and metatarsi distinctly longer, about 1.2 times as long as tibia; apical metatarsomere as long as preceding four segments.

Abdomen slightly narrower or broader than elytra, with two large transverse or oval tomentose spots in middle of abdominal tergite IV and distinct narrow palisade fringe on apical margin of abdominal tergite VII.

Male. Protarsomeres 1–4 moderately wide. Apical margin of abdominal tergite VIII straight or rounded. Apical margin of abdominal sternite VIII widely and deeply concave. Aedeagus with moderately wide basal part, gradually narrowed toward apex with small rounded apex, sometimes strongly curved ventrad; parameres narrow, distinctly broadened apically, slightly not or reaching apex of median lobe, with two very long apical and two moderately short preapical setae; parameral surface of median lobe slightly elevated, with distinct sclerotized narrow lateral edges in each side of the elevation; internal sac moderately short, with paired narrow strongly curved sclerotized structures in basal portion and long narrow flagellum between them ( Figs. 7, 9–14 View FIGURES 7–14 ). Lateral aspect of aedeagus as in Fig. 8 View FIGURES 7–14 .

Female. Protarsomeres 1–4 moderately narrow. Apical margins of abdominal tergite VIII and sternite VIII somewhat straight or rounded.

Intraspecific variability. Specimens of G. brevicollis are variable in proportions of the forebody, features of the punctation and microsculpture of the forebody. The shape of the apical part of the median lobe is variable also and can be narrow ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 7–14 ) or somewhat broadened ( Figs 13–14 View FIGURES 7–14 ). Usually, the apex of the median lobe is curved paramerad, so parameres from parameral (ventral) view may look shorter or longer than apex. Apical parts of aedeagi provided in Fig. XIV by Bordoni (1984) are very narrow. When I studied these specimens, I found that these aedeagi were possibly overcooked in KOH and slightly deformed. Some preparations of aedeagi of immature specimens or dried preparations sometimes are also looking strongly narrowed apically.

Comparative notes. Based on the shape of the pronotum with somewhat elongate laterobasal margins in front of hind angles, G. brevicollis is more similar to the Iranian G. alborzensis sp. n., from which it can be distinguished by the shorter elytra and more distinct ocelli. It can be distinguished from G. transversus by the slightly elongate pronotum, with longer laterobasal portions. From all species of the brevicollis group it differs by the shape of the aedeagus with narrowed apical part of the median lobe and details of the structure of the internal sac.

Distribution. Geodromicus brevicollis is widely distributed in the Caucasus ( Russia, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan), eastern Turkey and north-western Iran ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 ).

Bionomics. Specimens were collected at elevations from 1300 to 3300 m a.s.l. and were taken from under stones and in gravel along rivers and streams, and by sifting gravel, sand, mosses and litter. Some specimens were collected in the subnival zone near subalpine meadows and under stones near snow fields.

Remarks. Geodromicus brevicollis was originally proposed for misidentification of “ Anthophagus kunzei? Heer ” by Hochhuth (1849). The type locality of G. brevicollis is “Akhaltzik…Kaukasus” ( Hochhuth 1849). The type is possibly deposited in the insect collection of NMH NASU, Ukraine, Kyiv ( Glotov et al. 2022). Eppelsheim (1878) recorded G. brevicollis from “Karabulach …; Jemlekli-Gebirge, Kasbek und Chefsurisches Hochgebirge…”. Bordoni (1984) included this species in the subgenus Brachydromicus within the brevicollis group, provided several records and morphological features mainly concerning the morphology of the aedeagus. Assing & Schülke (2019) recorded it from several localities of Armenia.

Geodromicus latiusculus was originally described based on an unspecified numbers of syntypes from “Hochgebirge östlich vom Kasbek in den Gebieten der Chefsuren und Pschawe, 7000`” and compared with G. brevicollis . Luze (1903) redescribed it. Khnzorian (1962) included it to the key of Geodromicus of the Caucasus. Bordoni (1984) attributed this species to the brevicollis group of the subgenus Brachydromicus , designated a lectotype, provided additional material, and morphological features, including an illustration of the aedeagus. Khachikov (2010) recorded it from Fisht Mt. and Abago Mt. I studied four syntypes of G. latiusculus from NMW and two syntypes from HNHM (see above), and based on the study of the type and an additional material I confirm the synonymy with G. brevicollis previously established by Iablokoff-Knzorian (1989) which was overlooked by compilers ( Herman 2001, etc.)

Geodromicus constricticollis was originally described based on an unspecified number of syntypes from “westlishen Kaukasusgebiet am Fischt”. Luze (1903) provided brief morphological features of it. Bordoni (1984) attributed this species to the brevicollis group of Brachydromicus , studied the type and an additional material, and provided morphological features, including figure of the aedeagus. Khnzorian (1962) included this species (as “ G. globulicollis constricticollis Epp. ”) to the key of Geodromicus of Caucasus. Khachikov (2010) recorded it from Abago Mt. I studied several type specimens from NMW and one of them with the best condition, I designated here as the lectotype in order to fix the name. Based on the study of the type and an additional material, I confirm the synonymy with G. brevicollis previously established by Iablokoff-Knzorian (1989).

Geodromicus antennatus was originally described from “Montes Aibgenses; in hochalpiner Region…”. Luze (1903) synonymized it with G. constricticollis . Based on the study of the external morphology of the type specimen, I found it similar to other specimens of G. brevicollis . Thus, I confirmed the previously established synonymy by Luze (1903) with type specimens of G. constricticollis , and, besides that, with other studied specimens of G. brevicollis .

Geodromicus jarrigeanus was originally described based on the holotype and several paratypes from north-eastern Turkey. Bordoni (1984) attributed it to the major group of the genus. Bordoni (2010) recorded it from “Kulukkaia, Giresun ”. I studied the holotype ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1–6 ) and several paratypes and based on the external and internal morphological features not found sufficient differences between them and other specimens of G. brevicollis from the Caucasus. Thus, I synonymized G. jarrigeanus with the latter species.

Geodromicus ziganensis was originally described based on a single holotype ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1–6 ) from “Col de Zigana”, eastern Turkey. Shortly after, the same author regarded this taxon as a variety of G. jarrigeanus ( Coiffait 1978b) . Based on the study of the holotype, types of G. jarrigeanus and specimens of G. brevicollis from the Caucasus, I could not find sufficient external and internal morphological differences between all these specimens. Thus, I synonymized G. jarrigenus ziganensis with the latter species.

Geodromicus armeniacus was originally described based on a single holotype from Armenia. According Amiryan (2001), with the following labels: “Горис, Севлич, АССР, 26.07.1950 [Goris, Lake Sev, ASSR…]” .

Based on the original description, shape of the forebody ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1–6 in Iablokov-Khnzorian (1989)) and the aedeagus ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1–6 in Iablokov-Khnzorian (1989)), I could not detect sufficient differences between it and other specimens of the variable G. brevicollis . Thus, I synonymized G. armeniacus with the latter species.

Geodromicus brevicollis is here recorded from Azerbaijan and Iran for the first time.
