Type Locality: South Africa, Western Cape Prov., "Inhab. Cape of Good Hope".
Vernacular Names: Dusky Dolphin.

Distribution: Southern hemisphere: cold-temperate continental waters.
Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; IUCN – Data Deficient.
Discussion: Included in cruciger by Hershkovitz (1966 a:65), but considered a distinct species by Rice (1977), Brownell (l974), and Mitchell (l975 a). Previously reported from Kerguelen Isls, reidentified as young specimen of Cephalorhynchus commersonii ( Robineau, 1989) . Rice (1998:114) recognized L. o. obscurus (South African Dusky Dolphin), L. o. fitzroyi (South American Dusky Dolphin) and an un-named subspecies ( New Zealand Dusky Dolphin).
