Diagnosis. Recognized among other species of Cysteochila by a combination of the following characters: general color ashen ( Fig. 1A–E View FIGURE 1 ); median spine on head reaching level far remote from bases of frontal spines; rostrum reaching posterior margin of mesosternum; lateral carinae of pronotum nearly parallel to each other in anterior part, concealed by paranotum in anterior part; paranotum incompletely covering pronotal disc in anterior part, not touching each other, not concealing median carina of pronotum, widened posteriorly; outer margin of paranotum gently curved outward in its entire length; anterior margin of hemelytron nearly straight in its entire length; costal area narrower than subcostal area at widest part, with a single row of areolae in its entire length; and subcostal area with 2 rows of areolae in its entire length.
Description of genitalia. Pygophore ( Figs. 1D View FIGURE 1 , 17A View FIGURE 17 ) compressed dorsoventrally, hexagonal in ventral view, strongly concave at anterior margin of dorsum, smooth on surface, irregularly punctate in middle part of dorsum. Paramere ( Fig. 18A View FIGURE 18 ) expanded in middle part, curved inward in apical part; outer and inner margins covered with pubescence in middle part. Female terminalia ( Fig. 1E View FIGURE 1 ) pentagonal in ventral view, covered with pubescence.
Remarks. The above-recorded specimens match well with the photographs of the holotype (http://n 2t.net/ ark:/65665/3bd050830-c134-4d8d-adae-4bbe5d36e029) and the original description ( Drake & Poor 1937a) of C. abundantis described from the Philippines.
Cysteochila abundantis closely resembles C. tingoides in the shape of the pronotum but can be easily distinguished from it by the following characteristics: rostrum reaching posterior margin of mesosternum ( Fig. 1C View FIGURE 1 ); anterior margin of hemelytron nearly straight in its entire length ( Fig. 1A View FIGURE 1 ); and costal area with a single row of areolae in its entire length. In contrast, C. tingoides presents the following characteristics: rostrum reaching middle part of mesosternum ( Fig. 3C View FIGURE 3 ); anterior margin of hemelytron nearly straight in basal half and curved inward in apical half ( Fig. 3A View FIGURE 3 ); and costal area with 2 rows of areolae in basal part and a single row in remaining parts.
Distribution. Japan (Ryukyu Islands: Okinawa Island, Miyako Island, Ogami Island, Kurima Island, Irabu Island, Ishigaki Island, Iriomote Island, Yonaguni Island), Philippines (Mindanao Island, Luzon Island).
Cysteochila abundantis is here recorded from Japan for the first time. The discovery of C. abundantis from the Okinawa Island represents the northernmost distributional record of this species.
Host plant. Masami Hayashi, Hiroaki Kojima, and the first author of the present paper have confirmed Antidesma pentandrum (Blanco) Merr. (Euphorbiaceae) , Calophyllum inophyllum L. ( Clusiaceae ), Cinnamomum yabunikkei H.Ohba (Lauraceae) ( Fig. 2B View FIGURE 2 ), and Toddalia asiatica (L.) Lam. ( Rutaceae ) ( Fig. 2C View FIGURE 2 ) as the host plants of C. abundantis .
Biology. A number of C. abundantis individuals were collected from the leaves of the above-mentioned host plants in four botanical families, suggesting that this species is folivorous, similar to many other tingids ( Schuh & Weirauch 2020) and euryphagous.
In Japan, adults were observed in almost all seasons (present study).
