Diagnosis. Recognized among other species of Physatocheila by a combination of the following characters: general color light brown ( Figs. 8G View FIGURE 8 , 9F View FIGURE 9 , 10F View FIGURE 10 , 11F View FIGURE 11 ); median spine on head extending beyond bases of frontal spines; rostrum reaching posterior margin of metasternum; pubescence on pronotum less than 0.5 times as long as diameter of compound eye; lateral carinae of pronotum nearly parallel to each other throughout their length, touching outer margin of paranota at anterior end; paranota incompletely covering pronotal disc in anterior part, not touching each other, not concealing median carina of pronotum, not widened posteriorly, not bulged upward in posterior part, not forming a cyst; outer margin of paranotum nearly straight in its entire length; costal area of hemelytron as wide as subcostal area, less than 0.5 times as wide as discoidal area at widest part, with 2 rows of areolae in its entire length; and subcostal area subhorizontal, with 3 rows of areolae in its entire length.
Description of genitalia. Pygophore ( Figs. 10F View FIGURE 10 , 17I View FIGURE 17 ) compressed dorsoventrally, hexagonal in ventral view, strongly concave at anterior margin of dorsum, elevated at center of venter, smooth on surface, irregularly punctate in middle part of dorsum. Paramere ( Fig. 18I View FIGURE 18 ) expanded in middle part, curved inward in apical part; outer and inner margins covered with pubescence in middle part. Female terminalia ( Fig. 11F View FIGURE 11 ) pentagonal in ventral view, covered with pubescence.
Fifth instar nymph. General color light brown; antennal segment IV and all tarsi black; compound eyes light red ( Fig. 12A–C View FIGURE 12 ). Body oval in shape, 2.1 mm in length; dorsum with countless granular projections on surface. Head with five spines. Antennae smooth on surface, covered with minute pubescence; segments I separated from each other at their bases; segment II shortest among antennal segments; segment III longest among antennal segments; segment IV longer than segment I. Rostrum reaching posterior margin of metasternum. Pronotum with two pairs of spines along midline; anterior pair on anterior part of pronotum and posterior pair on middle part of pronotum; posterolateral angle with a single spine. Mesonotum with a pair of spines on posterior part; mesonotal wing pad reaching anterior margin of abdominal tergite V, with a single spine on outer margin. Metanotum with a pair of spines on posterior part; metanotal wing pad concealed by mesonotal wing pad throughout their length. Legs smooth on surface, longer than rostrum, covered with minute pubescence. Abdomen longer than combined length of head and thorax except mesonotal wing pad; tergite I with a pair of spines on posterior part; tergites II, V, VI and VIII with a single spine along midline; tergites IV–IX with a pair of spines on posterolateral angles.
Remarks. Physatocheila miyatakei closely resembles P. veteris in general appearance but can be distinguished from it by the following characteristics: hood roof-shaped ( Fig. 8G View FIGURE 8 ); lateral carinae of pronotum touching outer margin of paranota at anterior end; and subcostal area with 3 rows of areolae at widest part.
Distribution. Japan (Ryukyu Islands: Yakushima Island, Nakanoshima Island, Akuseki Island, Amami-Oshima Island, Tokunoshima Island, Kikai Island, Ishigaki Island, Iriomote Island).
Physatocheila miyatakei was recorded from Nakanoshima Island, Akuseki Island, Tokunoshima Island, Kikai Island, and Iriomote Island for the first time.
Host plant. Physatocheila miyatakei was collected from Prunus mume (Sieb.) Sieb. et Zucc. (Rosaceae) (Yamada & Tomokuni 2012), which may be its host plant.
Biology. Adults were observed from March to May, and in August and September, and nymphs were observed in March (Miyamoto 1964; Yamada & Tomokuni 2012; present study).
