Climaciella brunnea (Say)

Diagnosis of pupa. The overall color pattern is similar to the adult; the pale yellowish abdomen contrasts with the dark brown wing pads and with the raptorial forelegs, also mostly dark brown ( Fig. 1A ). The abdomen complies with that of the adult, in that a row of five to eight lines of pores is evident on each of tergites IV and V, which continue to the pleural zone ( Fig. 1B ). There is also a dark band surrounding the base of each of abdominal segments I-V ( Fig. 1C ), which contribute to a contrasting color pattern. Antennae also fit the morphology and color pattern of the adult, with segments wider than long and the apical segments pale yellow, although the antennae are shorter in the pupa ( Fig. 1B ).

Description of pupa. Exarate, decticous. Head brownish, width 3.10 mm; compound eyes gray ( Fig. 1A ), distance between them 1.34 mm; apical third of mandible dark brown. Antennae directed posteriorly above and between eyes, separated by 0.30 mm at base, length 3.19 mm approximately; scape spherical, width 0.28 mm; proximal 4/5 of antennal flagellum dark brown, apical 1/5 pale yellow ( Fig. 1B ).

Thorax pale brown, 6.12 mm long; prothorax darker. Wing pads dark brown, about 4.8 mm long, width 1.2 mm. Legs brown, medial and posterior pair paler, fore femur inflated ( Fig. 1A ).

Abdomen about 11.47 mm long, yellowish; tergites III-IV each with two pairs of midlateral sclerotized hooks, separated by 0.60 mm ( Fig. 1D ); tergites IV-V each with a transverse band (five to eight lines) of red circular pores extending to pleural area ( Fig. 1B, C ); segments I-V with a transverse basal dark band ( Fig. 1B ).

Material examined. Mexico: Estado de México, Municipio de Avándaro, Cascada Velo de Novia [about 1 Km N of town], 1800 m, August 2014, D. Curoe, 1 ♂ pupa. The pupa was found under bark of a rotten tree, at about 10 m from a stream, in temperate mixed forest (oak-pine-madrone).
