Taxon discussion

A recently-described species endemic from the northern Andes in Ecuador and Peru ( Jiménez-Mejías and Escudero 2016, Jiménez-Mejías et al., under review). As C. lepida (see comments above), it belongs to sect. Carex Wheelerianae .

In Ecuador, it was only known from the type locality also in Azuay Province, at Sevilla de Oro Municipality ( Jiménez-Mejías and Escudero 2016), on the Eastern Cordillera. This constitutes the second record of the species in Ecuador and the first in the Western Cordillera. In the collected locality it grows together with the closely-related C. lepida , with which it is seemingly hybridising (see above).
