Distribution. Brazil (states of Bahia, Espírito Santo, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro), Paraguay, Argentina, Venezuela. From 0 to 1074 m a.s.l. It is sympatric with H. consors in Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba, with H. tiradentense in Salesópolis, and with H. brianmayi in Ubatuba.
Diagnosis. Male: thorax with yellow line bordering black middorsal carina and no additional dark stripe on pterothorax (yellow line also bordered by dark line in older specimens) (Figs. 30A, 30B). Cercus in lateral view: small dorsobasal and ventrobasal expansions present. Almost straight (Fig. 11B). Cercus in mediodorsal view: basal, medial and apical portions subequal. No ventral expansion present. Medial process wide triangular plate, apex slightly bifurcate and not forming two distinct arms, with sclerotized ridge crossing middle of process (Fig. 11A). Female: thorax with yellow line bordering black middorsal carina and no additional dark stripe on pterothorax (yellow line also bordered by dark line in older specimens) (Figs. 42A, 42B). Female very close to female H. consors (and sympatric in several localities). Main structural difference between females shape of prothorax, roughly triangular in H. aurantiacum (Fig. 42C) and rectangular in H. consors (Fig. 42D). Valves of ovipositor not reaching distal S10, and in lateral view, ventral margin with small spines. Cercus longer than S10, with tuft of bristles at tip ( Fig. 47A View FIGURE 47 ). Basal plate: dorsal edge very long, ventral edge very small giving triangular appearance, outer edge almost straight and forming very acute angle with ventral edge of ovipositor ( Fig. 47B View FIGURE 47 ). Main difference in coloration two dark semicircles lateral to each compound eye in H. consors female (Fig. 42E),
not observed in females of H. aurantiacum (Fig. 42A); darker mark on antefrons of H. aurantiacum triangular (rectangular in H. consors ), and labrum without dark marks in H. aurantiacum (Fig. 42A), large dark mark in center in H. consors (Fig. 42E).
