Diagnosis. This species is part of a group of six species consisting of H. brianmayi , H. freddiemercuryi , H. rogertaylori , H. mantiqueirae , H. petiense and H. dorsale (Figs. 38E, 38A,39A, 37A, 37E and 40A). Of the six species, H. dorsale additionally possesses two sub-parallel dark stripes on metepisternum and metepimeron lacking in other five. H. petiense male is unique in having two large ellipsoid white marks contrasting with the largely black mesepisternum. Heteragrion mantiqueirae differs from other three by medial process not clearly divided in two horizontal branches and roughly rounded (Fig. 19A). Cercus in lateral view: dorsobasal expansion present. Ventrobasal expansion very small but present. Inclined upward, with tip curved ventrally (Fig. 19B). Cercus in mediodorsal view: basal, medial and apical portions subequal. Ventral expansion present with hairs sparsely covering ventral 1/4. Medial process a wide rounded plate, a higher slightly curved sclerotized ridge dividing plate in two, very small costate rim posterior to the sclerotized one (Fig. 19A).
