Lencioni; 2♀ same data as holotype but NC 1731, 14-I-2000 and NC 3149, 10-III-2002 GoogleMaps . 1♂ and 1♀ Brazil: São Paulo State, Ubatuba , 12-I-2011 ( NC 4746–4744 ), leg. F. A. A. Lencioni. Holotype, allotype, a pair and two female paratypes deposited in the author’s collection. Single males paratypes at AMPC and INPA .
Etymology. I name this species after Dr. Brian Harold May, astrophysicist and outstanding guitarist, mandibles and genae pale; anteclypeus pale brown with central black spot; postclypeus dark brown (almost black); antefrons pale with central black triangular spot; postfrons brown; top of head dark brown except for two ovoid yellow marks lateral to each lateral ocellus touching the base of antennae and two pale brown ovoid marks over each postocular lobe (Fig. 38E). Prothorax: propleuron yellowish; anterior lobe black; median lobe brown above, yellowish brown laterally; posterior lobe black bordered with brown (Fig. 38D). Pterothorax: mesepisternum yellowish orange with brown spot on posterior 1/10 meeting antealar crest; antealar carina black; mesepimeron black; metepisternum and metepimeron yellow; legs pale brown; wings hyaline. Abdomen: S1–8 very similar to H. freddiemercuryi but paler; S9–10 yellow ( Fig.58B View FIGURE 58 ). Cerci yellow with dorsal surface brownish (Fig. 27B).
Cercus in lateral view: dorsobasal expansion present. Ventrobasal expansion very large, occupying almost 1/2 length. Tip curved downward (Fig. 27B).
Cercus in mediodorsal view: basal portion shortest, medial portion longest. Ventral expansion present, sparsely hairy. Ventral branch of medial process rounded plate, attachment of medial process with basal portion obtusely angled (150º), dorsal branch triangular and fused with ridge almost at edge of ventral branch, inner edge sclerotized (Fig. 27A).
Measurements (mm). Total length 51, abdomen 42.5, forewing 29.5, hindwing 29.
Variation in paratypes. Same color as holotype (except one paratype teneral), but total length 49–50, abdomen 40–41, forewing 28–29, hindwing 27.5–28.5.
Illustration made from following specimens. 1♂ —(Fig. 27A, 27B, 38D, 38E, 38F, 58B)— Brazil: São Paulo State, Caraguatatuba, Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar —Núcleo Caraguatatuba, 05-II-2000, leg. FAAL (Holotype —NC 1765) ;
Diagnosis. All four new species can be diagnosed using the table below.
FEMALE (Allotype). Head: labium pale; labrum brown with distal and proximal borders orange; base of mandibles, genae and anteclypeus pale yellow; postclypeus black; antefrons brown; postfrons black; rear of head pale; top of head matte black except for the following yellow pale marks: one round mark in front of median ocellus, one curved line between lateral ocelli and median one, one clublike mark between lateral ocelli and occipital ridge, pair of ovoid marks over each postocular lobe, and from in front of each ovoid to base of each antenna an upside-down L-shape ( Fig. 43A View FIGURE 43 ). Prothorax: propleuron and median lobe yellowish gray; anterior lobe yellowish gray with anterior edge black; posterior lobe yellow with black ovoid central mark ( Fig. 43C View FIGURE 43 ). Pterothorax: mesepisternum ivory yellow with black elongate spot starting at mesostigmal plate and ending close to but not touching antealar crest; antealar carina black; mesepimeron ivory yellow with elongate black spot starting at level of second thoracic spiracle and ending close to antealar carina; mesinfraepisternum with ventral half almost black and dorsal half ivory yellow; metepisternum pale; metepimeron pale. Dorsally thorax with ivory yellow M-shaped mark ( Fig. 43B View FIGURE 43 ); legs brown; wings hyaline. Abdomen: S1 brown above, pale below; S2 brown above with long middorsal triangular pale mark, pale below; S3–7 dark above except for a pale basal ring, dark area expanded laterally near the apex; S8 dark upper 1/4, pale yellow lower 3/4; S9 pale with brown middorsal semicircular mark covering anterior third; S10 pale yellow ( Fig. 49A View FIGURE 49 , 58C View FIGURE 58 ); Valves of ovipositor not reaching distal S10, ventral margin with long spines; Cerci longer than S10, with small tuft of bristles at tip.
Basal plate: Dorsal and outer edges subequal and almost straight, ventral edge 1/3 length of outer edge, tip rounded ( Fig. 49B View FIGURE 49 ).
Measurements (mm). Total length 45, abdomen 37, fore wing 30, hind wing 29.5.
Variation in paratypes. Same color as female allotype but total length 43–45, abdomen 35–38, forewing 29.5– 30, hindwing 29–29.5.
Illustration made from following specimens. 1♀ ( Fig. 43A, 43B, 43C View FIGURE 43 , 49A, 49B View FIGURE 49 , 58C View FIGURE 58 )— Brazil: São Paulo State: Caraguatatuba, Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar —Núcleo Caraguatatuba 10-III-2002, leg. FAAL (Allotype —NC 3150) .
