Genus SERRADIGITUS Stahnke View in CoL
n = 9/24
An important feature of the Serradigitus telotarsus is the possession of a single pair of telotarsal distal spinules (Sissom 1985), which is a character it shares with the paruroctonoids, Pseudouroctonus iviei , “smaller” Vaejovis mexicanus group spp., V. mumai , and the V. nitidulus group.
Most Serradigitus exhibit somewhat “basic” complements of basitarsal and telotarsal setae. On the basitarsus there are usually 14–16 setae, whereas S. adcocki , S. harbisoni , and S. polisi have higher counts of 17–20. Serradigitus harbisoni , a relatively large species, has higher counts in the retrosuperior and ventral series. Other vaejovids that possess fewer than 17 setae include some Pseudouroctonus (those with 13–16), Uroctonites (with 13–16), Uroctonus mordax pluridens (with 16), Vaejovis mexicanus group (small montane spp., with 14–16), V. jonesi (with 14), V. waueri (with 15–16), V. mumai (with 16), V. platnicki (with 15), V. crassimanus (with 14–16), and V. bruneus villosus (with 16).
The telotarsal setal counts for Serradigitus species are 13–14, which compares with Paravaejovis pumilis (with 14), Paruroctonus gracilior (with 14), the P. stahnkei group (with 13–15), Pseudouroctonus apacheanus (with 12–14), Uroctonites montereus (with 13), V. rossmani , V. mexicanus group (small montane spp., with 11–16: 13 in V. jonesi , 11–13 in V. vorhies i and 14–16 in V. paysonensis Soleglad ), V. bilineatus (with 14), V. coahuilae Williams (with 14–15), V. confusus Stahnke (juvenile, with 14), V. diazi diazi Williams (with 14–15), V. globosus (with 14–15), V. waueri Gertsch & Soleglad (with 13), V. mumai (with 14), V. peninsularis Williams and V. platnicki Sissom (with 13 each), and V. bruneus villosus Williams (with 13). Refer to the accounts of the other genera or species groups for other comparisons. Consequently, in its setation patterns Serradigitus exhibits similarities to a variety of vaejovid taxa.
Basitarsus: Serradigitus species have 14–20 setae on the examined surfaces: S, 1–2; distal lms, 3; RS, 1–3; RV, 3–4; DRV, 1–2; V, 3–5; DV, 1. Spinules, 20–63 (0 in S. gertschi striatus [Hjelle]); RS spinules, 11–25; RV spinules, 9–18 (29 on S. adcocki [Williams, 1980]; 36 on S. harbisoni [Williams]); V spinules, 0–5.
Telotarsus: Total setal complement ranges 13–14: ri, 1; rid, 1; rit, 1; rm, 1; rmt, 1; rs, 1; rst, 1; pi, 1; pid, 1; pit, 1; pm, 0–1; pmt, 1; ps, 0–2; pst, 0–1. Spinule series (10–20: mean = 15.78; var = 7.21; sd = 2.69): d s, 2; vms, 5–14 (mean = 9.70; var = 5.08; sd = 2.25); bs, 2–6 (mean = 4.09; var = 1.21; sd = 1.10).
Serradigitus adcocki (Williams)
Serradigitus adcocki compares favorably with S. harbisoni and S. polisi in having high basitarsal setal counts (18; 17 in S. polisi , 19–20 in S. harbisoni ) and spinule counts (41; 34 in S. polisi , 63 in S. harbisoni , respectively). It differs from S. polisi in having 2 retrosuperior setae (instead of 1) and from S. harbisoni in having 4 ventral setae (instead of 5). On the telotarsus it lacks a promedial seta, which is shared only with S. gertschi gertschi among Serradigitus .
