Genus SMERINGURUS Haradon View in CoL tarsal segments were not included in the diagnosis, as were with the species and groups of the nominate subgenus in subsequent publications.
Basitarsus: Members of Smeringurus examined have 20–29 setae on the examined surfaces: S, 4–12; distal lms, 3–5; RS (MRS), 1–3; RV, 4–7; DRV, 2; V, 3; DV, 1. Basitarsal spinules, 43–72; RS spinules, 11–37; RV spinules, 24–45; V spinules, 0–2.

Smeringurus grandis (Williams)
( Figs. 112–117)
Smeringurus grandis is not psammophilic and thus lacks bristlecombs on the basitarsus. It differs from the other two species examined in having 6 superior setae ( S. mesaensis [Stahnke] with 8–12, S. vachoni [Stahnke] with 4) and 6 retroventral setae ( S. mesaensis with 7, S. vachoni with 4) on the basitarsus, and 2 ret-

Smeringurus mesaensis (Stahnke) ( Figs. 1 and 118)
Smeringurus mesaensis is an obligatory psammophilic species. The bristlecombs on the tarsi have high and apparently variable numbers of long setae interspersed with accessory setae. The telotarsus possesses minor setae on the superior midline, very slightly prolateral, superior apical. A single adult female has 12 major and no minor basitarsal superior setae; the locus of a proximal minor seta on the other adults (males and females) exhibits a seta comparable in size to the other major setae. The other adult basitarsal superior series counts range 8–9. A juvenile specimen is noted below in parentheses. A subadult female (not included in analysis) has similar counts to the adults with the exception of the telotarsus superior apical (the proximal one), which is represented by a single, minute seta.
Telotarsus: Setae (17 [16]): ri, 1 (1); rid, 1 (1); rit, 1 (1); rm, 1–1+ 1m (1); rmt, 1 (1); rs, 3+ 1m –4+ 3m (3); rst, 2 (1); pi, 1 (1); pid, 1 (1); pit, 0–1 (1); pm, 1 (1); pmt, 1 (1); ps, 1–1 + 1m (1); pst, 2 (1); sa, 2 (0). Spinules (15–17: mean = 15.56; var = 0.69; sd = 0.83): ds, 2–3 (mean = 2.11; var = 0.10; sd = 0.31); vms, 7–10 (mean = 8.22; var = 0.84; sd = 0.92); bs (loop), 4–6 (mean = 5.22; var = 0.40; sd = 0.63).
Specimens examined: CALIFORNIA: Inyo: SE Owens Lake, 3 f, 4 m ( GP); Riverside County: Coachella Valley , 1 m ( UCR) .
Smeringurus vachoni immanis (Soleglad)
Smeringurus vachoni immanis differs from the other two species examined in having fewer superior and retroventral setae on the basitarsus (see comparisons above) and some specimens exhibit additional major setae among the superior lms series. The telotarsus differs in having 2 retroinferior terminal setae (instead of 1) and
Basitarsus: Setae (20–23): S, 4, 4+1; DSM, 1; DPS, 2, 1; DRS, 1+ 1m, 1, 2; RS, 2, 3; RV, 4+ 2m, 4+1; DRV, 2; V, 3; DV, 1. Spinules (43–67): RS, 11–26; RV, 24–39 (31); V, 1–2 (2).
Telotarsus: Setae (17): ri, 0; rid, 1; rit, 2; rm, 1–1+ 1m; rmt, 1; rs, 1; rst, 2, 1(sa); ap, 1; pi, 1; pid, 1; pit, 1–1+ 1m; pm, 1; pmt, 1; ps, 1; pst, 2. Spinules (14–19): ds, 2; vms, 7–9 (7); bs (loop), 5–10 (7).
