Type Locality: Costa Rica, Cordillera de Talamanca, El Copey de Dota, 6,000 ft. (1,829 m).

Vernacular Names: Mountain Spiny Pocket Mouse.

Distribution: Talamanca Range of Costa Rica.

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (nt).

Discussion: Hall (1981) placed oresterus in the subgenus Xylomys but Rogers (1989, 1990) presented evidence that oresterus was not closely related to nelsoni , the type species of Xylomys . Reviewed by Rogers and Rogers (1992 a, Mammalian Species No. 396).
