scientific name

Hypomasticus copelandii (Steindachner 1875)
status

Hypomasticus copelandii (Steindachner 1875)

Extant specimens: MCUC ZOO.0000056 ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 ).

Classification on the specimen: “P. Abd. Salmo mediterraneus ”.

Common names on the specimen (Portuguese/Tupi): None/ “Piába”.

Comments: This species was undescribed at the time Veloso prepared it. As Salmo mediterraneus is a name not available, and that this species is described in Ichthyologia Fluminensis manuscript with the same name, we believe that Veloso probably intended to name it. In the Ajuda’s inventory, there are 37 herborized specimens of Salmo listed, but no specimen of Salmo mediterraneus is listed in the transference document to the University of Coimbra. However, there is one specimen that is reported to have been transferred to Lisboa (not found). Hypomasticus copelandii occurs in the coastal drainages of southeastern Brazil from rio Jucuruçu basin to rio Paraíba do Sul basin ( Mendes et al. 2022).
