Akodon (Akodon) aliquantulus Díaz, Barquez, Braun, and Mares 1999 View in CoL , J. Mammal., 80: 788.
Type Locality: Argentina, Tucumán Prov., Tafí Viejo Dept., Las Aguitas, Cumbres del Tafícillo, 1700 m; 26º42′S, 65º22′W. GoogleMaps
Vernacular Names: Diminutive Akodont.
Distribution: Known only from the type locality.
Discussion: Subgenus Akodon , A. boliviensis species group ( Myers et al., 1990). A small species related to A. puer (here = A. lutescens ) but morphological differentiation from that form unimpressive based on multivariate ordinations and univariate overlap (Díaz et al., 1999:Fig. 2, Table 1). The differing treatments of species limits and affinities among these small akodonts (especially aliquantulus , alterus , boliviensis , caenosus , lutescens , spegazzinii , subfuscus , and tucumanensis —see Hershkovitz, 1990 c, vis a vis Myers et al., 1990, and overview by Díaz et al., 1999) signal the need for concerted regional examination using multiple data sources, larger sample sizes, specimens from intermediate regions, and detailed transects across habitat types, e.g., following the revisionary model of Myers et al. (1990).
