Leptochirus (Tropiochirus) zischkaianus Scheerpeltz, 1951 View in CoL
( Figures 2I View Figure 2 , 3I View Figure 3 , 7 View Figure 7 , 8L View Figure 8 )
Leptochirus (Tropiochirus) zischkaianus Scheerpeltz, 1951: 10 View in CoL [original description. Type locality: “ Yungas del Palmar , 2000 m ”].
Leptochirus zischkaianus View in CoL ; Herman, 2001: 1107 [world catalogue].
Type material. Leptochirus (T.) zischkaianus . Lectotype (female) “ Bolivia: Yungas / de Palmar 2000 m / 31.III[March].1949 / leg. R. ZISCHKA” “COTYPUS / Leptochirus / zischkaianus / O. Scheerpeltz” “ LECTOTYPUS / Leptochirus (Tropiochirus) / zischkaianus Scheerpeltz, 1951 / Desig. Asenjo and Ribeiro-Costa, 2013” ( FMNH). Note: In the original description Scheerpeltz (1951) specified that he studied three specimens: one male and two females (type, cotype). We received from the FMNH a female with the label “Cotypus” here designated as lectotype.
Additional specimens
BOLIVIA. La Paz: 20 km W. Chairo, 14.i.1997, Seth J. Duer col. Under bark of dead tree (1 female FMNH) ; Cochabamba: Prov. Carrasco, Serrania de Siberia, Chua Khocha , 2300 m, 1.ix.[19]11, M. Ledezma col., cloud forest, under bark (1 female FMNH) ; idem locality, 30.viii.1990, P. Parrillo col., cloud forest, under bark (1 female FMNH) .
Diagnosis
Leptochirus (T.) zischkaianus and L. (T.) marina sp. nov. share the superior marginal line of the hypomeron almost reaching the posterior margin, but L. (T.) zischkaianus can be distinguished by the microsculpture longitudinally undulate in the median region of the metaventrite.
Redescription
BL: 8.41, BW: 1.48
Body strongly depressed, all black except tarsi red-brown.
Head transverse ( Figure 2I View Figure 2 ). Inner lateral teeth separated by a depression extending to base. Inner and outer lateral teeth fused and resembling a septum; median sulcus deep, gradually narrowing anteriorly; laterofrontal depressions oval. Labrum with outer edge strongly angled and lateral-apical edge concave. Mandibles ( Figures 2I View Figure 2 , 3I View Figure 3 ) with lateral longitudinal ridge occupying less than two-thirds of apical region; external margin developed, attenuated anteriorly. Left mandible ( Figure 3I View Figure 3 ) with first dorsal tooth developed, straight and bifurcate, accessory tooth near lateral longitudinal ridge; second dorsal tooth little developed and resembling a small hill; first ventral tooth with tooth accessory, third ventral tooth pointed. Submentum with setae arranged in a row on the anterolateral margin.
Thorax. Pronotum ( Figure 2I View Figure 2 ) a little wider than long (PL: 1.47, PW: 1.65); superior marginal line of hypomeron not interrupted, not bent to dorsal region at anterior margin and almost reaching posterior margin; without pair of small depressions near basal constriction. Inferior marginal line of hypomeron reaching anterior margin. Apex of prosternal process strongly expanded and resembling a circular plate, considerably beyond the lateral process of hypomeron. Metaventrite with microsculpture longitudinally undulate in median region and without small longitudinal median depression near posterior edge. Mesoscutellum with apex rounded. Elytra longer than broad and with pair of small depressions on posterior-lateral edge (EL: 1.92, EW: 1.66).
Abdomen cylindrical. Sternite III with keel of apex rounded.
Male. Not known.
Female. Gonocoxites composed of two plates divided longitudinally ( Figure 8L View Figure 8 ). The distal plate with apex membraneous and long seta; proximal plate with the posterior region rounded.
Distribution
In the current study Leptochirus (T.) zischkaianus is listed from Bolivia. Herman (2001) also lists to Bolivia ( Figure 7 View Figure 7 ).
Biological notes
This species has been found under bark, associated with fermenting decaying logs in cloud forest.
