TYPE LOCALITY: Brazil, Amazonas, Borba (on lower Rio Madeira) .

DISTRIBUTION: Amazon Basin, including Amazon estuaries and Atlantic coast of Ilha de Marajo.

COMMENT: T. exunguis Natterer, 1839 , in Diesing, Ann. Wiener Mus. Naturgesch., 2: 230, should be regarded as a nomen oblitum (DPD). Reports from Orinoco basin are unsubstantiated (DPD and JS). Reviewed by Husar, 1977, Mamm. Species, 72:1-4.
