Conservation: U.S. ESA – Candidate taxon; IUCN – Vulnerable.

Discussion: Subgenus Spermophilus ( Hall, 1981:384) . Current status assessed by Betts (1999). Reviewed by Rickart and Yensen (1991, Mammalian Species No. 371).
