Ecological notes: found in mixed woodland, mainly pine; alder carr; grazed wet heath; wetlands including valley fen, bog, sedge bed, basin mire with Schoenus nigricans , Sphagnum and Phragmites and grazed Molinia and Myrica ; open montane habitats. vii–x.

Taxonomic note: Highland Region record in Freeman (1983b) was of Scatopsciara subciliata . The Salop [= Shropshire] and Herts [= Hertfordshire] records were Bradysia nigrispina Menzel sp. nov.
